Loreto Charter Fishing Heats Up with Monster Tuna Catch

Loreto Charter Fishing Heats Up with Monster Tuna Catch

Baja is known for its incredible fishing and the mild winters are certainly an advantage for its famous charter fishing industry. This January, just 50 miles southeast of Puerto Escondido—a natural harbor located 15 miles south of the town of Loreto—my team and I over at Outpost Charters caught a 319-pound cow-size tuna. We started on our 40-foot Cast N’ Reel, one of the three charter boats based out of Puerto Escondido, anchored, and began chunking frozen squid. Twenty minutes later, the monster tuna responded, and was caught on one of the two big outfits.

Loreto Charter Fishing

The beautiful seaside town of Loreto as well as Puerto Escondido are home to some of the best big game fishing in the world. We like to fish El Seco, a pinnacle rising from 2,500 feet deep to a mere 14 feet or less, about 10 miles southwest of Catalan Island. At various peak times, it attracts swordfish, black marlin, blue marlin, wahoo, and big tuna. This year the big tuna are early and timing is everything.

The day before, we caught a 215.5 pounder at El Seco and my crewman Jorge Lazo, caught a 319 pounder on a flylined mackerel in the squid chum line. All-in-all, we had an amazing few days of big game fishing.

I’ve lived in Loreto for two years now, and for me, it has it all. It’s one of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever seen, while being action-packed with water sports, yet perfectly serene for those looking for a quieter lifestyle. Coming from Orange County in California, I immediately fell in love with the Loreto real estate opportunities. You can buy an oceanfront villa for a fraction of the price you pay in the U.S. (Orange County in particular!) and I especially love the slower pace of life here.

Check out all our Loreto listings to see our inventory of beautiful homes for sale, rent as well as land for sale. We not only sell beachfront estates, but also family villas, land and commercial properties to fit every style and budget.
