After relocating to the picturesque small town of Loreto, Mexico from Southern California, I was surprised at the many culinary options Loreto has… more than 70, I’m told! And each place is unique and delicious in its own right. After living here for a few years, I decided to break down what I consider to be the five best restaurants in Loreto.
1. Mi Loreto
For truly authentic, Mexican cuisine, Mi Loreto is your best bet. This busy, family-run business, (be sure to say hola to Edgar!) is adorable with delicious cuisine (try the Mole!) and to-die-for cocktails (try the Mango Margarita!) For phone number, business hours and address, check out their Facebook page
Think you can’t get homemade Lasagna in Mexico? Think again. With views of the quaint downtown Main Street area, the South-American-Italian restaurant (strange, but it works!) Mezzaluna serves incredibly fresh pasta dishes, pizza, homemade empanadas, inventive salads and crepes for dessert! (Savory crepes are also available.) Be sure to try the spinach lasagna! For their hours, phone number and address, check out the Mezzaluna website
3. Asadero Super Burro
Did you say baked potatoes with burritos? While you probably shouldn’t take a fancy date here, this family-owned restaurant has successfully married this unlikely pairing of foods. Watch the cooks prepare your meal over a wood-fired grill as the smell of the open fire wafts through the canteen-style restaurant. Oh and don’t forget to try the Carne Asada Papa Relleno! Check their Yelp page
for hours and location.
4. La Picazon
If you have a hankering for fresh seafood, head to this off-the-beaten-path restaurant with stunning ocean views. Twenty minutes north of downtown Loreto, La Picazon serves lunch, dinner and drinks on the beach. Check out the Palapa bar to try one of the best margaritas you’ve ever tasted. For operating hours and address, find them on Facebook
or go to the La Picazon website
(note they have more than one location).
5. El Zopilote Brewery & Cocina
If atmosphere it your thing, this local gastropub in the heart of Loreto Town Square is a must-try. Sample locally-brewed beers on the open air terrace, surrounding by romantic hanging lanterns, or indulge in distinctive menu items ranging from creamy pastas to filet steak and chicken fajitas. Owned by a Mexican-Irish couple, this restaurant is a great choice for dinner with that special someone. Check out the El Zopilote Facebook page for hours and contact info. (And try the fish tacos!)
