Why Loreto Mexico is the Best Place to Retire

Why Loreto Mexico is the Best Place to Retire

So you’ve worked hard your whole life and now it’s time to finally shut down that computer and call it a day. There are a bevy of articles online with tips on the best places to retire, but as a U.S. ex-pat myself, I have found that one of the best places to retire is Loreto, Mexico.

For many people, retirement means less income, but more freedom to do what they choose. One logical response to both: move to a place with a lower cost of living and active lifestyle offerings–such as climate, rich culture, and ample opportunities to stay fit.

My advice? Move to Loreto if want to be on or near the beach and live in a quiet, resort-style village with minimal tourism. Here in Loreto, you can fish, snorkel, hike and ride your bike to La Mercado. Loreto is also known for amazing charter fishing and for being a tranquil paradise surrounded by natural wonders like the Marine park. Hugged by a small number of islands, if you love water sports, welcome to paradise.

Another aspect that makes Loreto an ideal place to retire is its accessibility. Although this little village is remote, it is only an hour or two from most cities in northern Mexico and with an airport nearby, it’s just two to four hours from most major cities in the U.S. by air.

Loreto is also steeped in history and was the first Spanish town in the Baja California Peninsula. It is the site of the first mission capital of the Californias founded in 1697 by Jesuit priest Juan Maria Salvatierra. In the Jesuit Missions Museum, you can browse through a collection of 17th and 18th century religious art and tools used in Baja California’s Spanish missions. You can also find cave art carved into the walls and rocks of the majestic Sierra de la Giganta, a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

If you’re looking to retire in a quieter, non-tourist beach destination in Mexico, away from the crowds of Los Cabos, please come out to Loreto and see for yourself. Its close proximity to the United States, easy access to La Paz and Los Cabos, and great road and air connections are making Loreto a destination of choice for retirees and people seeking second homes in Mexico. Ready to look for a home in Baja? Check out all our Loreto listings to see our inventory of beautiful homes for sale, rent as well as land for sale.
